Job Summary: The Institute for Social Science Research is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Undergraduate Research Assistant to support administrative and research-related tasks, particularly those connected to sponsored project tracking and data entry processes. This position is best suited for students interested in gaining valuable experience in a research-oriented administrative environment while working closely with faculty and staff.


Additional Department Summary: The Undergraduate Research Assistant provides behind-the-scenes administrative and research support for ISSR, working closely with the College Research Coordinator and Accounting Assistants on sponsored project tracking and related processes. In this role, the student will assist with maintaining and updating research project databases, performing data entry, organizing documentation, and scheduling meetings. Responsibilities also include preparing tracking spreadsheets, assisting with basic research-related tasks, and ensuring accuracy and consistency in project records. Students will complete IRB training as needed and adhere to ethical research and administrative practices. Working under the guidance of ISSR’s College Research Coordinator, the Undergraduate Research Assistant will contribute to smooth internal operations and help ensure timely and compliant management of sponsored research activities.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama undergraduate student. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.


Skills and Knowledge: Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with accuracy. Effective communication skills to work collaboratively with staff and faculty. Proficiency with spreadsheets, data entry, and basic tracking. Capacity to learn and apply University systems, policies, and procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality with financial and personnel records. Proficiency in basic computer applications (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite).


Preferred Qualifications: Majoring in computer science, math/statistics, engineering, business administration, or related field. Experience in an office or administrative support role. Familiarity with University of Alabama systems (e.g., Concur, Banner, or similar). Experience with data entry or creating excel tables for tracking.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
