Job Summary: The Library Public Services Assistant assists patrons in the use of the library and its resources. Creates, edits, and maintains records in libraries online database system. Supports various library units depending upon department assigned, any of the following: reserves and current periodicals, circulation, interlibrary loan, acquisitions and government documents, library ordering, purchasing and budgeting. Obtains and lends materials outside the University campus. Provides routine library facilities and equipment support. May supervise student workers.


Additional Department Summary: This position is responsible for all operations in obtaining material for UA faculty and graduate students that are unavailable in the UA Libraries’ collections. Initiating the borrowing process by performing bibliographic verification in OCLC and RLIN online databases and the internet; identifying appropriate sources for materials; ordering materials via OCLC, RAPID, or other appropriate methods.

Performs public services and/or technical processing duties that require in-depth knowledge of unit polices, standards, and codes. Frequently uses one or two automated system modules in such activities as inputting data or searching moderately difficult records. Communicates with other library units/departments, university offices, and outside agencies such as libraries and/or vendors on matters of moderate complexity. Collaborates with UA Libraries consortia such as GWLA, SEC, KUDZU, and NAAL. Directs students as needed. Provides input in the development of unit policies and procedures. Performs duties with limited authority to make decisions. Assists with all Circulation duties as needed, including Chat hours and night and weekend rotation.


Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of library experience; OR associate's degree or higher and some library experience.


Skills and Knowledge: Basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and email applications. Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing. Ability to interact in a positive manner with co-workers, patrons, and outside entities.
