Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm


Job Summary: The Academic Advisor I provides guidance to University students on academic progress, courses, University resources, etc. Identifies courses to be completed in upcoming semesters. Explains University and College policies. May teach compass course as needed.


Additional Department Summary: Works with a team of academic advisors to guide students through the educational process here at the Capstone. Uses appropriate advising practices/theories while working with students to foster academic success. Advises students in course and major selection by communicating general education, College of Engineering, and major requirements. Communicates accurate and timely information and clarify University policies and procedures. Presents and assists with a new student and transfer orientation sessions. Creates an environment where students are encouraged to learn, grow, and utilize institutional resources. Seeks opportunities to learn about the advising profession and contribute to the College of Engineering Advising Team and The University of Alabama.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher.


Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of academic advising and best practices. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Public speaking skills. Computer skills to include word processing, spreadsheet and/or database management. Good planning, coordinating, and organizational skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures.


Preferred Qualifications: Relevant experience with DegreeWorks and Banner.
