Job Summary: The Research Engineer uses fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a particular field of specialization to perform varied scientific research requiring application and adaptation of established techniques, procedures, and criteria. Evaluates, selects, and applies standard scientific techniques, procedures, and criteria to accomplish a variety of research assignments. Performs various research projects to include conducting experiments, writing research proposals, writing technical papers and research reports.


Additional Department Summary: The Alabama Materials Institute (AMI) facilitates interdisciplinary materials research encompassing metallurgy, ceramics, polymers, bio-inspired materials, and composites. Teams of researchers, faculty, and students work collaboratively to identify and advance new materials, understand their fundamental properties, and develop novel processes for synthesis, fabrication, and manufacturing using advanced experimental and computational approaches.

This position will deliver comprehensive training to users of AMI instrumentation, empowering them to effectively utilize cutting-edge tools and fostering a culture of technical proficiency. Collaborate on customer-driven projects utilizing the AMI suite of instrumentation, including processing equipment and advanced characterization tools. Develop and execute experimental plans, troubleshoot challenges, and report actionable outcomes to AMI leadership and customers. Provide oversight and maintenance of materials processing equipment, leveraging experience in powder metallurgy to ensure optimal performance and reliability.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of research experience; OR master's degree and some research experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Due to requirements of the funding source, must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident.


Skills and Knowledge: X-ray, ion, and electron microscopy methods; powder metallurgy; additive manufacturing.


Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline. Experience with and a solid foundation in technical problem-solving and process optimization.
