Job Summary: The Export Control and Research Security Specialist I performs day-to-day operations associated with the campus-wide export compliance and research security program. Processes all new invention disclosures by faculty, staff and students, including reporting of new inventions to Federal funding agencies.


Additional Department Summary: The Office for Research Security and Export Controls (ORSEC) is housed within the Office for Research & Economic Development (ORED), with a campus-wide mission to ensure export control and research security compliance. By working with researchers across campus and with external partners, ORSEC forges key relationships that allow for the research enterprise at The University of Alabama to achieve next-level results. ORSEC supports the University’s mission of teaching, research, and service by ensuring compliance with applicable export control and research security laws, regulations, and University and governmental policies, while fostering an environment supportive of its efforts to cultivate a campus-wide global perspective and extend its outreach on a worldwide scale.

Reviews, drafts, records, reports and maintains documentation required by federal regulations. Adheres to reporting requirements for appropriate federal agencies. Responds to various requests from federal agencies and internal stakeholders in support of the various compliance functions. Secures and properly maintains sensitive, confidential information and data.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and some experience. Must be able to obtain Export Compliance Training Institute (ECTI) Certified Export Compliance Professional Certification within one year of start date.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Due to U.S. export control regulations governing information, technology, and facilities accessed during the performance of this work, applicants must be: (1) U.S. citizens or nationals; (2) permanent residents; (3) asylees or refugees; or (4) individuals otherwise described as "protected individuals" according to Title 8 U.S. Code Section 1324b(a)(3)(b).
