Job Summary: The Engineering Researcher II oversees engineering research projects and assumes responsibility for the day-to-day activity supporting project. Makes significant contributions to the planning and design of research and creative projects. Assists in short- and long-term planning and project goals. May assist with research and creative proposals and dissemination of project findings.


Additional Department Summary: Performs and manages high level research with faculty in the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Design Integration (CAMMDI). Research functions include but are not limited to research design, data collection, data analysis, modeling, simulation, visualization, and/or dissemination efforts. Collaborates with faculty, researchers, staff, and students from varied academic and research units across the University and external organizations.

Leads and supports research activities in laser powder bed fusion and additive friction stir deposition. In the case of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), this position will be the key point of contact for daily operations of the new laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing capability at UA. In this facility, LPBF is used to manufacture three-dimensional, metallic components. Ensures that the LPBF capability and its auxiliary equipment are running correctly and safely and will work with both internal and external users. Writes proposals with both internal and external colleagues to externally fund research using the LPB capability. Supports and lead programs in additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) and cold spray deposition of metallic materials, performing AFSD experiments and analyzing materials produced by AFSD. Writes proposals for external funding involving the AFSD technique and related technologies.


Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Due to requirements of the funding source, must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident.

Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering. Candidates with strong materials research backgrounds and a doctoral degree in a related field such as mechanical or chemical engineering will be considered. Demonstrated experience in LPBF or AFSD (or related friction stir processing) is required.

Candidates will need to have completed their Ph.D. or have it completed by the start of employment. Skills and Knowledge: Strong verbal and written communication. Ability to safely operate research instrumentation and complex machinery, and ability to train and supervise others using machinery.
