Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; some nights & weekends required


Job Summary: The Energy Engineer I works to ensure buildings and equipment operate at peak energy efficiency under general supervision. Provides engineering support in the operation of the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems as it relates to energy consumption. Assists with energy audits by collecting, tracking, and analyzing utility metering and usage data and reports results to department heads.


Additional Department Summary: Provides engineering support of the University of Alabama Facilities and Grounds Operations. Works for the UA Energy Management Department and supports the energy conservation requirements of campus.

Assists the University in managing its utilities as efficiently and effectively as possible, while providing a comfortable, safe, and healthy environment that is functional for use by The University of Alabama community. Assists with energy management activities, coordinates utility data acquisition, and provides data analysis. Develops and implements energy reduction projects. Develops long-term energy strategies which lessen the impact that energy consumption has on the University; both financially and environmentally. Assists with activities of the Energy Management department related to budget preparation and administration. Reviews and approves building and equipment specifications. Coordinates with other departments to provide customer service.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in engineering and some engineering experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ability to work long and/or unusual hours to include nights and weekends depending on the schedule of campus events.

Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.


Skills and Knowledge: High-level analytical and creative skills required to resolve issues and determine effective solutions to complex problems. Good Interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot blueprints, schematics and plans. Ability to do material takeoffs. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and other computer management systems, and the ability to effectively use these for purposes of efficiently managing projects, communicating, and reporting. Ability to organize time and work requirements in an efficient manner. Ability to initiate and support continuous improvement methodologies. Ability to perform on-site inspections. Ability to lift, handle, and maneuver the tools, materials, and supplies of the job.


Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering and some engineering experience.
