Job Summary: The Box Truck Driver drives and operates a box truck, including liftgate. Transports materials on- and off-campus. Ensures all vehicles are kept clean. May perform preventive maintenance check.


Additional Department Summary: Campus Mail Service is charged with providing high-quality, cost-effective mail and package service to support the University of Alabama’s business operations and student population. Campus Mail has two operational centers. The Kirkbride Mail Center services University departments as well as Greek houses and operates the University of Alabama Fingerprinting and Passport Facility. The Campus Mail Service Center, located in the UA Student Center, provides student mail and package services, including all parcel lockers, and operates a retail shipping facility.

Drives and operates the Campus Mail box truck, including liftgate. Retrieves mail from the US Post Office at numerous locations, multiple times per day, as directed. Acts as an agent of the department and takes possession of mail and packages from USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc. Loads and unloads mail and packages, including mail and package carriers.


Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience; OR associate's degree or higher and some experience. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to work in a physical, fast-paced position that involves continual lifting and lowering packages that typically weigh 25-35 lbs. Must have the ability to lift and carry heavy objects that could exceed 50 pounds. Must have the ability to lift and carry heavy objects that could exceed 150 pounds with assistance and the use of hand trucks.

Skills and Knowledge: Ability to drive and operate a box truck. Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions. Basic computer and keyboard skills (data entry, portable data collection devices, etc.). Ability to use various resources including computer systems/software applications. Ability to learn the mail center's software systems within the first few weeks of employment. Ability to learn the University's mail sort scheme and mailstop codes within the first few weeks of employment. Ability to learn the location of campus buildings, parcel lockers, offices, and mailstop locations within the first few weeks of employment. Ability to deal with the public in a respectful manner while providing exceptional customer service. Ability to work without consistent supervision and follow-up. Have a strong sense of urgency and a commitment to excellence.


Preferred Qualifications: Advanced knowledge of postal regulations and procedures. General knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs (Word, Excel, Internet). Advanced knowledge of Campus Mail procedures, as well as hardware and software used in mail processing. Advanced knowledge and proven track record in providing high-quality customer service. Certified Passport Acceptance Agent.
