Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm


Job Summary: The Assistant Manager of University Laboratory Safety assists in the development of written documents and materials addressing and detailing chemical hazards, incompatibilities, and health effects. Conducts training for faculty, staff, and students on these topics, customized to meet the needs of specific principal investigators. Assists principal investigators (PI) and researchers in the development of standard operating procedures specific to their spaces, ensuring alignment with standard lab operations and experimental procedures. Ensures needs and gaps identified within the laboratory safety programs are addressed in a timely manner. Assists with remediation of high-hazard labs containing large, complex chemical inventories. Performs lab inspections and audits. Responds to emergency situations after hours. Assists in identifying and coordinating all laboratory technology issues related to the Patriot Act, Homeland Security requirements, and other mandated programs.


Additional Department Summary: Develops written documents and materials addressing and detailing chemical hazards, incompatibilities, and health effects. Trains faculty, staff, and students on these topics. Assists principal investigators (PI) and researchers in the development of standard operating procedures specific to their spaces. Works with laboratories to identify needs and gaps within the laboratory safety program(s) and aids in the implementation of programs that will address those needs. Assists with the remediation of high-hazard labs containing large, complex chemical inventories. Provides training or training resources which are customized to meet the needs of specific PIs and performs lab inspections and audits. Assists in identifying and coordinating all laboratory technology issues related to the Patriot Act, Homeland Security requirements, and other mandated programs. Failure to perform these functions at a high level could result in regulatory violations and associated fines. Required to maintain communication accessibility 24 hours a day/7 days a week. May be required to respond to emergency situations after hours.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of laboratory safety experience; OR master's degree and two (2) years of laboratory safety experience.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen and physical.


Skills and Knowledge: Ability to operate computer software such as databases and word processing. Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications: Chemistry degree and a minimum of three (3) years experience in an academic laboratory environment in a four-year institution of higher education.
