Job Summary: The Groundskeeping Spray Technician applies herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers in roadsides, ditches, easements, ornamental plants, etc. Inventories, distributes, stores, and purchases herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. Mixes herbicides and chemicals for the purpose of spraying. Calibrates computer equipment and calculates percentages desired in the mix of various herbicides. Plans and carries out work, resolving any problems in accordance with instructions, policies and accepted practices, and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances. Drives various vehicles from site to site. May serve as a lead worker over other Grounds employees.
Additional Department Summary: Stand, walk, lift, and carry groundskeeper equipment for prolonged periods. Shifts may exceed 8 hours per day depending on the condition of the grounds and campus event schedules. Work will take place in all types of weather: hot, cold and/or rainy conditions depending on the season. Assigned job-related locations will occur at various locations, including football games.
Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of herbicide, landscaping, or groundskeeping experience.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Must be able to work overtime, sometimes on short notice.
Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to perform preventative and minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Maintain accurate records related to chemical application. Operate a spray truck, computerized spray machine, 200-gallon sprayer, backpack sprayer, fertilizer and spreader, aerifier, and hand tools while performing essential functions. Identify varieties of weeds, trees, flowers, shrubs, and grasses. Lead and instruct a small work crew. Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Interact effectively with the public.
