Job Summary: The UREC Personal Trainer designs safe and effective personal training programs for individual clients, adapting the strength training program to each patron’s specific needs and abilities. Instructs patrons in strength training principles, training procedures, and exercise techniques.

Instructs patrons on the proper and preferred use of all the strength training equipment. Informs patrons of new information regarding strength training safety and effectiveness. Provides individual supervision and reinforcement during patrons’ training sessions. Promotes UREC Fitness Services and Programs through personal example and patron interaction. Maintains a neat, clean, and safe environment in Personal Training Studios and throughout all UREC facilities. Stays current on fitness concepts and ideas, and actively participates in all meetings and in-service training sessions. Enforces all University Recreation policies and procedures. Acts in designated role in Emergency Action Plan. Additional duties as assigned.


Additional Department Summary: University Recreation employs over 400 students each semester in customer service, programming, and operational support positions across all UREC facilities, including the Student Recreation Center, Witt Student Activity Center, Outdoor Pool Complex, and Aquatic Center. We're looking for personable and responsible individuals to engage patrons of all ages in a variety of recreational activities and services.

All UREC positions require an excellent attitude and willingness to learn, ability to obtain required certifications, and availability to work a flexible schedule based on our operational hours. Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama student. Certified Personal Trainer. Attach Fitness Certification (ITC certificate accepted) to application. Obtained valid, NCCA-recognized personal training certification (such as NSCA, ACE, NASM, or ACSM). Current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED certification, or ability to complete certification requirements upon hire. Ability to work with adults from beginner to advanced levels of fitness experience. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Ability to work a minimum of 8 to 10 hours per week. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Final candidates must be able to successfully complete Fitness Services skills assessment prior to employment. All aspects of skills assessment must be achieved to UREC standards for employment consideration.


Skills and Knowledge: Thorough knowledge and application of strength training principles, training procedures, and exercise techniques. Understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures. Leadership and public relations skills. Customer service skills.


Preferred Qualifications: One (1) semester of general coursework in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health Science, or related field. Work experience in strength training, personal training, or fitness facility environment.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
