Job Summary: The Student Assistant Teacher works with the classroom teaching team. Provides a safe and nurturing environment for children ages 2 months to 5 years of age. Works closely with the lead classroom teacher in planning for, and managing, a classroom of children. Assumes the lead role with the children when the lead teacher is working with students, parents, administrators and/or faculty. Monitors and documents activities for the practicum students. Supervises the interns and substitute teachers. Models developmentally appropriate practices for the students observing and participating in the classroom. Maintains and supports a safe and healthy learning environment for all children in their care. Encourages each child’s creativity and curiosity. Keeps the lead teacher informed about significant communications, events or concerns involving the staff, lab students, or parents of children in the classroom. Communicates daily reports of the children‘s activities and/or behavior to the parents during pick up at the end of the day.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama undergraduate student. At least 19 years of age. Experience with young children (birth to 8 years old). TB Skin test required (no less than 6 months prior to working).


Skills and Knowledge: Educational background in early childhood development. Ability to model developmentally appropriate practices. Ability to relate to young children, ages 2 months to 5 years, and to promote their social–emotional development, physical development, cognitive development and development of age-appropriate language and literacy skills. Ability to relate to parents. Ability to relate to student participating in the HDFS lab school setting. Ability to work with a diverse population.


Preferred Qualifications: College coursework completed in human development, child development, early childhood, and/or elementary education. Reliable transportation. Availability within class schedule to work within the CDRC hours (Monday - Friday 8:45am to 5:30pm).


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
