Job Summary: The UREC Lifeguards ensure the safety of patrons by surveilling pool activities and enforcing all University Recreation policies, rules, and regulations during Summer 2025. Work to prevent and respond effectively to emergencies as needed. Work at multiple facilities, including the Aquatic Center, Student Recreation Center, and Outdoor Pool Complex.

This position is a critical member of the facility Emergency Action Plan.


Additional Department Summary: Enforce all University Recreation policies, rules, and regulations. Prevent, mitigate, recognize, and respond effectively to emergencies. Competently act during implementation of Emergency Action Plan. Respond to patron inquiries and concerns, and initiate action for resolution. Inspect the facility on a daily schedule, and immediately report any unsafe conditions and equipment to the supervisor on duty and Coordinator of Aquatics Programs. Complete records and reports as required and in a timely manner. Perform cleaning and maintenance tasks during shift for general facility upkeep & assist with facility set-ups and events. Maintain strength, endurance, and overall fitness levels required to execute required duties of Lifeguard position. Maintain certifications as needed to meet the minimum requirements for employment. Actively participate in all required meetings and in-service training sessions. Complete additional duties as assigned.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama student enrolled and continuing as a part-time or full-time student for the next academic year. Ability to lift and move up to 45 lbs. Successful demonstration of American Red Cross skills and knowledge at pre-employment skills test (see Physical Demands for additional details). Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification; or ability to complete certification requirements upon hire (Required courses are offered through UREC upon hire). Ability to work 10 to 20 hours per week. Ability to work a flexible schedule, to include some early mornings, nights, weekends, and/or holiday hours as needed.


Skills and Knowledge: Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques. Understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures. Leadership and public relations skills. Decision-making skills.


Preferred Qualifications: Six (6) months experience as a lifeguard; OR certification through University Recreation/Kinesiology lifeguard course. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification. American Red Cross Emergency Oxygen Administration Certification. American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogen & Prevention Certification.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
