Job Summary: The Pool Operations Assistant monitors and maintains proper water chemistry and filtration for pools at all UREC facilities. Handles general maintenance and cleaning of facilities and equipment. Assists with setup, on-site management, and teardown for swim meets and other special events. Provides a safe and fun environment that promotes belonging and holistic health for all.


Additional Department Summary: Performs water chemistry testing on pools during each shift. Detects and troubleshoots water chemistry issues, adjusts/balances pH of pool water as needed, and keeps management informed of any issues. Records water chemistry tests and adjustments and maintains proper documentation. Performs regular maintenance checks and upkeeps on filtration and chemical systems. Operates pool vacuums, cleans deck equipment, and performs additional cleaning as needed. Assists with setup, on-site management, troubleshooting, and teardown for swim meets and other special events. Provides for the health and safety of all participants by ensuring that pool areas are free of hazards and materials and equipment are safe for use. Enforces University Recreation policies, pool rules, and regulations. Recognizes and responds effectively in emergencies in accordance with facility emergency action plans. Provides a high level of customer service to patrons and guests. Actively participates in all meetings and in-service training sessions. Additional duties as assigned.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama student enrolled and continuing as a part-time or full-time student for the next academic year. Ability to swim and tread water in pool for maintenance and cleaning. Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments. Ability to lift and move up to 55 lbs. Ability to work 10 to 20 hours per week. Ability to work a flexible schedule, to include some early mornings, nights, weekends, and/or holiday hours as needed.


Skills and Knowledge: Knowledge of principles and practices for pool water testing and proper chemical water treatments. Understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures. Strong problemā€solving skills and ability to use independent judgment when needed.


Preferred Qualifications: Pool maintenance experience. Nationally recognized Pool Operator Certification (CPO or AFO). American Red Cross American Red Cross CPR/AED First Aid (Infant, Child, Adult).


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
