Job Summary: The Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) for the Learning Commons assists with the necessary research and development of tutorial services to more strategically impact students. Provides supervision in a satellite location. Manages and collects data.

Oversees tutoring operations at satellite location(s). Manages student employees. Assists with check-in/out procedures and closing procedures. Assists with tutoring operations. Interviews tutor applicants. Trains tutors on CCSS-Learning Commons Tutoring policies, procedures, and operations. Assists with tutor orientation. Assists with scheduling students and tutors. Oversees tutors' professional development. Manages data. Maintains visit records and data. Organizes and updates Learning Commons resource materials. Develops curriculum. Researches and develops tutor training methods. Offers suggestions for effective tutor training methods. Researches effective tutoring centers for ideas to increase student reach. Assists with class visits, browsing fairs, and campus events to increase student awareness of services. Works with the CCSS staff to develop outreach events and ideas. Coordinates efforts with campus partners to organize and promote services at satellite tutoring locations. Supports evaluation efforts. Offers ideas for improving evaluation tools. Provides constructive feedback to tutors after observing session(s). May provide support by facilitating academic coaching sessions with students.


Additional Department Summary: The Learning Commons in the Capstone Center for Student Success (CCSS) works to deliver academic support services to University of Alabama undergraduate students as a part of the University's plan for academic success.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama graduate student. Bachelor's degree.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ability to supervise the delivery of tutoring programs for individuals and groups of students. Ability to supervise groups, deliver training, and manage data collection and reporting.


Skills and Knowledge: Willingness to learn data collection and reporting. Desire to learn study skills and academic resources. Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications: Background in math, science, education, or social work. Highly developed interpersonal skills. Strong organizational and management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks. Detail-oriented. Ability to work independently and adhere to deadlines.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
