Job Summary: The Graduate Student Assistant oversees and supervises the Intercultural Center student team. Plans and executes multiple events throughout the year. Facilitates Center tours. Assists in center operations. Reports directly to the Intercultural Center Administrator of the Intercultural Center.

Establishes and executes programming ideas to help educate the student body, faculty, and staff in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan. Oversees, supervises, and assists in the development and implementation of campus-wide events and programs that service the educational, social, and recreational interests of The University of Alabama and its engagement and connection efforts. Assists in overseeing and managing the daily operations of the professional and event space suites, welcome desk, reservations, tours, and report reviewal. Assists in the creation and management of an operations budget. Tracks spending on items related to the Center. Documents events, compiles semester reports of participation and student satisfaction, recommends improvements, and tracks departmental end of shift and incident reports by following up with staff and guests when necessary. Develops and maintains a working knowledge of University policies related to risk management, grounds use, purchasing, contracts, and environmental health guidelines. Supervises and advises a student team of five or more students in various units. Attends weekly and monthly professional development opportunities. Provides on-site assistance for set-up before, during, and after events. Provides evening and weekend coverage. Provides support on work orders, inventory updates, and logistical needs. Additional duties as assigned.


Additional Department Summary: The Intercultural Center (IC) advances The University of Alabama’s mission by serving as a resource and liaison for students, staff, and faculty to learn from, learn with, and learn about each other. The IC welcomes over 5,000 students, faculty, staff, and external guests/visitors every semester through co-curricular programs and initiatives offered by the Center and the Division of Opportunities, Connections, and Success. To create an environment the fosters the connections of engagement through programming and co-curricular partnerships and activities, the Graduate Student Assistant will serve as a representative for evening events and Center operations, serving as a liaison between external partners and divisional staff members.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree. Current University of Alabama graduate student. Ability to maintain a minimum of 2.50 cumulative GPA. Ability to work 20 hours per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week during the summer semester. Ability to work events in the early mornings, late nights, and weekends. Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.

Skills and Knowledge: Ability to effectively communicate both University and divisional expectations, standards, policies, and procedures on behalf of the Division of Opportunities, Connections, and Success. Ability to adapt quickly to change. Ability to enforce and maintain confidentiality requirements and sensitive information with the Division of Opportunities, Connections, and Success and University per FERPA. Strong organizational skills and keyboarding skills. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to exercise discretion. Ability to work well with students, staff, faculty, and other collaborative partners of the Capstone community. Excellent time management skills. Detail-oriented.


Preferred Qualifications: Majoring in higher education/student affairs, RHM (restaurant and hospitality management), public relations, or communications. Experience in event planning, hospitality, project management, and/or leadership related to group/teamwork. Ability to work during Summer 2025 and Fall 2025 to assist in the creation and implementation of the Division of Opportunities, Connections, and Success’s Week of Welcome, Social Justice Movie Series, and other series and events that fall within the divisional programming and engagement model. Ability to become quickly familiarized with Microsoft Office Products (Planner, Team, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) as well as iOS Systems (Keynote, Pages, etc.), OneDrive, Google Drive, and UA Box.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
