There is a possibility for the position to continue during the Fall 2024 semester. Students enrolled in summer classes may work up to 20 hours per week. Students not enrolled in summer classes may work up to 35 hours per week depending on availability and department need.


Job Summary: The Student Assistant works with Circulation and Interlibrary Loan staff to support Library operations. Assists patrons in finding library materials. Checks materials in/out. Processes returned materials. Shelves, shifts, and maintains the order of library materials. Performs hourly walkthroughs of the building. Provides excellent customer service to patrons in person and on the phone at Library service desks. Packages and ships materials. Assists with departmental projects and other tasks as assigned.


Additional Department Summary: Below are available shifts.

  • Monday - Thursday 7:30am to 12:00am
  • Friday 7:30am to 9:00pm
  • Saturday 10:00am to 9:00pm
  • Sunday 11:00am to 12:00am

Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama undergraduate student. Ability to work designated shifts as assigned by supervisor. Ability to work some evenings and weekends. Ability to work at least 10 hours per week. Ability to stand for several hours, lift books, and push/pull book carts.


Skills and Knowledge: Excellent customer service skills. Proficient in the use of personal computers and MS Office software. Ability to operate and troubleshoot office equipment. Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, and community members. Ability to manage time effectively. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other student workers and staff. Excellent attention to detail. Strong desire to learn new skills.


Preferred Qualifications: Customer service experience. Experience working in a library. Computer skills.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
