Job Summary: The Graduate Research Assistant supports the Alabama Transportation Institute by assisting with research data management, grant development, and research communications. Collects and organizes data related to research impact. Supports proposal preparation. Helps to maintain internal systems and reports.


Additional Department Summary: Assists in collecting and maintaining current data on research activities, including presentations, publications, external funding, and outreach. Supports the preparation of required reports. Helps organize qualitative and quantitative metrics for internal reporting and external promotion. Helps gather research highlights to internal UA outlets and faculty departments. Conducts background research on funding opportunities and compile relevant information for dissemination to ATI-affiliated researchers. Helps maintain ATI’s grant resource database, including proposal language, program facts, university stats, and faculty bios. Supports the development of pre-award documents and proposal-related data collection. Organizes and assists with a central repository for grant announcements and submission timelines. Helps manage deadlines and timelines for collaborative grant submissions and special projects.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Current University of Alabama graduate student. 


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ability to collect, organize, and maintain research and grant-related data with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively with ATI staff, faculty, and research teams to support data tracking, reporting, and proposal preparation. Must demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools—especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint—and Smartsheet or similar project/data management platforms is required.


Skills and Knowledge: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong skills in organization and managing information, with attention to detail and the ability to synthesize both quantitative and qualitative data. Skills in research data management, and academic communications. Familiarity with metadata, digital curation, or content management systems is a plus. Willingness to support grant development and research reporting processes. Desire to apply library and information science principles in a collaborative, research-focused environment.


Preferred Qualifications: Research data management, information organization, or academic research support experience. Strong written communication and synthesis skills. Highly developed organizational skills, including managing multiple tasks and deadlines. Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and take initiative. Familiarity with research reporting, grant writing support, or data visualization is a plus.


Enrollment Requirements: Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment. Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Undergraduate Students must be registered for at least 6 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Undergraduate = 12 credit hours, Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters. Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment. Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
